New High-Current, Surface-Mount Inductors from Vishay Serve Power Conversion Designs in Notebooks, Cell Phones, and Handhelds

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA, USA - October 1, 1999 - Six new series of high-current, surface-mount inductors for compact dc-dc converter applications were released today by Vishay Intertechnology. Released were new devices in the 2512, 5020, and 7328 packages, with both shielded and unshielded options for each package type. With package outlines as small as 6.6 x 4.45 mm with a 2.92 mm height profile, the new inductors will save space in power conversion designs in notebook computers, cell phones, pagers, and other handheld devices.

"By themselves, these new components greatly multiply the available options for high-current inductors, and when combined with power MOSFET and power IC products from Vishay Siliconix, they enable a very large range of buck and boost converter designs to be completed with both passive and active components from a single supplier that designers know and trust," said Mike Husman, Director of Product Marketing at Vishay Dale.

Unshielded devices in the 2512 (IDC-2512), 5020 (IDC-5020), and 7328 (IDC-7328) packages feature inductance values from 1 microhenry to 1000 microhenrys and a ±20% inductance tolerance. DC resistance is as low as 9 milliohms for 1-microhenry components in the 5020 and 7328 packages, with maximum current values as high as 8.6 A.

Magnetically shielded devices in the 2512 package (IDCS-2512) are offered in a range of inductance values from 1 microhenry to 10,000 microhenrys and feature high self-resonant frequency values and high Q values (QMIN from 30 to 50) at higher frequencies. Shielded 5020 devices (IDCS-5020) feature inductance values from 1 microhenry to 390 microhenrys with nominal Q values from 25 to 48 and DC resistance as low as 21 milliohms. Shielded 7328 (IDCS-7328) devices are offered in a 10-microhenry to 1000-microhenry range, with DC resistance as low as 40 milliohms and maximum rated DC current as high as 3.9 A.

All six families of high-current inductors are provided in tape and reel form for automated assembly and feature rugged construction permitting normal exposure to infrared reflow solder to +260°C. Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of six to eight weeks for larger orders.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets. Its product innovations, successful acquisition strategy, and ability to provide "one-stop shop" service have made Vishay a global industry leader.
