Industry’s First Thin Film Fusible Resistor Chip Reduces Space Requirements and Assembly Costs With Automatic Placement Capability

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA — February 7, 2003 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the industry’s first thin film, rectangular resistor chip featuring a fusible function and a 1206 case size. The new Vishay Draloric M25SI resistor is designed to reduce space requirements and assembly costs while providing overload protection for battery circuits and control units, as well as for circuit function test applications in end products including battery chargers, cordless phones, DVD players, CD-ROM readers, and power supplies.

The M25SI fusible resistor chip provides a medium- to fast-acting fuse with a flame-retardant protective topcoat, limiting the risk of damage to circuits behind the fusing resistor in case of a breakdown. The resistor chip is compatible with cost-saving, automatic, high-speed insertion equipment. The device’s small 1206 case size (3216 metric) measures just 3.2 mm by 1.6 mm with a height profile of 0.45 mm, enabling designers to save space by using the M25SI to replace fusible resistors with axial leads. By providing a less-expensive alternative to using a glass fuse and a resistor, the M25SI also allows manufacturers to reduce assembly costs.

The new device from Vishay features a temperature coefficient of 100 ppm/K, a standard tolerance of 5%, and a resistance range from 1 Ω to 3.9 kΩ. Extended value ranges, including a temperature coefficient down to 50 ppm/K and tolerance down to 1%, are available on request.

The M25SI is rated for 0.25-W power dissipation at 70°C and, when tested in accordance with CECC 40401, thermal resistance of ≤220 K/W. The resistor offers good pulse handling with pulse duration of 100 µs and pulse pause of 100 ms at 0.9°W pulse power (square pulse).

The M25SI consists of metal film on high-quality ceramic with SnPb contacts on a Ni barrier layer, weighs 10 g per 1,000 pieces, and features an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. With reliable performance under changing environmental conditions, the device conforms to CECC40000 / 40400 and EN140400 / IEC 60115 – 1 specifications.

Samples of the M25SI thin film resistor chip are available now, with a lead time of six to eight weeks for production quantities.
