(NYSE: VSH) today announced the availability of the industry's smallest fast infrared (FIR) transceiver used for short-distance, wireless communication. The new Vishay Semiconductors TFBS6614 transceiver measures just 2.7 mm high - a reduction of more than 25% compared with other FIR transceivers on the market - while maintaining a typical communication distance of 1 meter. Design engineers can now upgrade to the faster data rates of an FIR transceiver while making their handheld devices smaller and thinner. Communicating at 4 Mbit/s, the TFBS6614 features 20-times faster throughput than serial infrared devices, allowing quick exchange of even large MP3 and MPEG data files. Given Intel's® Xscale embedded FIR controller, the TFBS6614 transceiver can easily be adopted by the PDA market, particularly for Pocket PC applications. In PDAs, the TFBS6614 transceiver can also be used as the emitter for TV remote control, providing transmit distances equivalent to standard remote control emitters. For PDA and mobile phone applications, the TFBS6614 transceiver allows a low-voltage controller (to 1.5 V) to connect directly to the transmit, receive, and shutdown logic signals of the transceiver. This capability eliminates the need for a costly signal-level converter and reduces power consumption. Sample quantities of the TFBS6614 are available now. Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets. Its product innovations, successful acquisition strategy, and ability to provide "one-stop shop" service have made Vishay a global industry leader.
